An Appeal to Make their Christmas Brighter
Nowadays, celebrating Christmas season has been so far the most budgeted holidays for the entire year. An average family will be spending about 2 to 4x more expenses during Christmas season than the usual expenses they spent on regular days. This so far is unquestionable, whether a family will do that for the sake of enjoying Christmas day.
I have come to think about other families who are in tight financial situation right now. I am from this country where there are families who will need to celebrate their Christmas day without their homes, and without their loveones. Almost 3 months before December 25th, we experienced one the worst typhoon that ever hit our country. September 26th, 2009, a typhoon which was ignored by many as it does not bring any threat for everyone as what was stated on weather news. That was all we thought when suddenly, the typhoon poured out the worst and heaviest rain of all time that our country ever experienced since 1970′s. After raining for almost 12 straight hours, almost every cities in our region were flooded. The flood which washed out many villages, subdivisions, and the water rises over rooftop of some houses. Many lives had been lost as well during this tragedy. I also remembered some weeks ago, other families lost their homes through fire. All of their belongings and entire houses were burned out of the fire and some too lost their loved ones.
I didn’t mean to ruin your Christmas day by sharing these situations with you. I respected the way everyone celebrates Christmas extravagantly. But rather, I am here writing because I wanted to remind all of us that we can still celebrate Christmas simplier and extend what we have to give to these families who’ve lost everything they have. We cannot totally be happy on Christmas day while seeing these families without anything to eat for the Christmas eve. I am not asking you to make some donations over charities immediately, but if you feel doing so, go ahead, do it for Christmas’ sake. I am appealing to all of you to share the spirit of Christmas to the people you know have lost someone and have lost everything from tragedies recently. Who knows, these might be your friends, relatives, classmates, officemates, churchmates, or neighbors, and whoever you know that is needing someone to help him/her.
Christmas is not about eating fancy and well-prepared foods and drinks on the table. It is not only about exchanging gifts with your family, eating more what you can eat, and drinking as if there would be no tomorrows. But for a family who lost everything, Christmas is about someone giving them a simple meal on the table that they can share with, a clean water to drink and a soft pillow and mattress to lay their backs on. You may have some extra things that you don’t need anymore on Christmas day, would you rather keep it inside your room or kitchen without using it anymore, or give it to those who need it the most?
Finally, we should all be reminded that there is this Christmas because someone (Jesus Christ) had shared His life to the needy people, to the sinners, and to those who have lost everything. Jesus was always there for them to give them what they need. He always make miracles to feed thousands of people who are hungry, and He gave them joy by showing them that they are special in His eyes.
Let’s go outside on Christmas day and share the love that we have on these people. Christmas is all about celebrating with them and making their Christmas day looks brighter despite what they have gone through life. In return, it will also make your day much brighter and be merry the whole year round.
