by on January 28, 2012

Much awaited tablet computer from Apple, called iPad is out and internet is full of reviews about this sleek and light weight gadget from different first users/testers of the device. PCWORL D, GADGET LAB, The Wall Street journal and Ubergizmo are already out with detail review of the new gizmo from Apple. This article summarizes what has been accepted as good features of iPad and where it lacks, as per different reviews available.

The Look: The sleek iPad with aluminium back and black bezel around the screen looks excellent, as if it has been designed by perfectionist. Its weight 1.5 (Wi-Fi model) and 1.6 lbs (Wi-Fi +3G model) makes it light weight and easily portable.

The Screen: The screen of iPad offers good sharpness, contrast and colours.  The important point is that it has stable brightness distribution irrespective of the viewing angle. The bright and responsive multi-touch screen and the software for easy user interface make it very easy to navigate.

Media consumption: Though Apple’s interface for book reading is simple and readable, it slightly inferior to kindle from Amazon. But the Kindle application is also available on the gizmo. Video playing and music listening using headphone is excellent.

Productivity: The virtual keyboard is good only for small typing job like replying to e-mail. But it does not go well with long report typing. Email functionality is working very well. While the file management outside i-Tune is very poor, offering very little for file management. Web browsing is good and social media on iPad is very effective.

Battery Life:  All reviewers found that battery life of iPad battery is excellent. Walt Mossberg of The wall street journal played video, movies and TV shows and found that battery last 15% longer than what has been claimed by Apple. Its 10 Hours life is much higher than typical laptop battery life.

However the iPad fails to meet some expectations of the prospective buyers and there is a scope for improving on these aspects.

It has no camera. Non-availability of USB port is a major limitation. It does not provide multi tasking for third party applications, making background data crunching or music playing impossible. The virtual key board needs improvement to increase productivity.

To summarize instant-on iPad is great for web browsing, email, reading news and comics,  watching movies while travelling, watching photos, videos and Map application. However, it disappoints user on gaming, long typing/writing, productivity applications and instant messaging.
